Bathtub refinishing is one method of upgrading old, cracked, or stained fixtures without actually purchasing and installing a new tub. Because the process involves adding a new coat over the top of the existing fixture, it is occasionally referred to as bathtub re-glazing or bathtub re-enameling. However, new varnish must be applied every few years to maintain its fresh look.
For a temporary solution, refinishing is a lengthy process. Over the span of several days, contractors will:
- Clean and sand the bathtub
- Vacuum away sanded-down debris
- Fill in chips, dents and scratches
- Re-sand and re-vacuum the patched areas
- Apply several coats of industrial chemicals and sealants
When done correctly, refinishing can restore the superficial cracks and stains on your existing tub. However, the secondary top coat can peel and chip as badly – if not worse – than the original. Even the best finish can’t stand up to the same amount of wear and tear as the initial surface.
There is another option, though, that also allows homeowners to place a new finish over the top of their existing tub. This option, known as tub lining, provides more durable and long-lasting results. Liners are made from fade-resistant non-porous acrylic, and are guaranteed to last for the entire life of the home.
The liners are custom-cut to fit seamlessly over the top of your existing tub. An installation team will make sure it lines up with your current drainage and plumbing systems, then permanently secure it into place. As with refinishing, this process doesn’t require you to remove and dispose of the existing tub.
Post-installation, acrylic liners are much easier to clean than refinished surfaces. Refinished tubs require regular maintenance, but won’t stand up to abrasive scrubbing or harsh cleaners (like Ajax). Bathtub liners, on the other hand, are made from mold-resistant compounds and finished with an additional grime-repelling anti-microbial coat.
